Mount Leinster

This month, let's take a road trip to Mount Leinster and give the kids a stretch of the legs uphill. The novelty of looking down at the views is something that they won't take for granted since the scenery is dramatic. And if you’ve come from the flatlands in the South of Wexford the contrast is exciting for kids!

To get there, drive to Bunclody and turn left onto Barkers Road (at the end of the main street). Continue to drive down this road. There are spectacular views of Blackrock Mountain and Mount Leinster (with its TV mast). And the beautiful River Clody valley will unfold before you.

Mount Leinster is most often climbed from the Nine Stones which is located at the highest point of the road, at the entrance to the RTE TV mast. At the top of this road is a cairn burial mound. There is some serious hiking available but I recommend that you go as far as little feet can! Remember you have to climb down again also. A rest with a drink and snack will give them a chance to take in the scenery and give the smaller ones an energy boost.

A second car park is approximately 300 metres down the road at Corribut Gap. There are several walks to explore and another is one opposite the TV mast. It offers amazing views over Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow and further afield. After your walk you can drive back the way you came or continue in a circular route back towards Bunclody, just watch out for a sharp left turn in Kiltealy. This offers a different view of county Wexford!

Alternative routes: From Gorey, take the Carnew road, R725 into Bunclody go right onto the main street.  From Ferns, follow the R745 across the N80 and continue on the R745, turn left at the T-junction toward Kiltealy, at Cullentragh take the right on to the lesser road and follow it around Mount Leinster till you see the sign posts for the car parks (ensure you drive through Kilanne – if the kids are bored, stop at the graveyard here and try to find the monument to Captain John Kelly. (as in the famous ballad "Kelly the boy from Killann). Hint: it’s a celtic design cross!
