According to Irish Folklore and Traditions, Dublin is awash with haunted places where ghosts are meant to wander and there are many historical buildings with spooky backgrounds! Why not visit one or two this Halloween and get into the spirit of things! The Hellfire Club, Co Dublin: Built in the 1700’s as a hunting lodge, it soon became known as the place for satanic rituals and other strange happenings. Many have reported seeing dark shadows walking and running through the rooms, and figures standing outside behind the large stones. St Michan's Church, Dublin 7: First built in 1095 for the Vikings who were not allowed within the city, this church is home to a burial vault underneath the chapel. Guided tours lead visitors into a stone tunnel lined with burial chambers, where some of the dusty corpses can be admired in their open coffins. Among these are a nun, a man missing a hand and both feet, and a Crusader who had to be sawn in half to fit into the coffin. Legend has it that Bram Stoker's Dracula was inspired in part by the author's childhood visits to this macabre vault. Dublin Castle, Dublin 2: Located in the centre of Dublin, invaders to this castle were beheaded and displayed on the castle wall as a deterrent to others.Hundreds of decapitated bodies are buried beneath the castle. Their vengeful souls are said to still roam the castle. Tour guides have reported poltergeist activity! Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin 8: One of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland's emergence as a modern nation from 1780s to the 1920s. The gaol is believed to be haunted by both former inmates and the ghosts of wardens. St Audeons Church, Dublin 8: Sited in the heart of the walled medieval city, St Audoen's Church is the only remaining medieval parish church. Free tours and exhibition of this medieval building take place, fokelore states the "Green Lady" one of Dublin's most famous ghosts is regularly spotted in the church and grounds.
